Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2013, $442,245)
The Children's Justice Act (CJA) Partnerships for Indian Communities Grant Program (Victims of Crime Act of 1984, Section 1402(g), 42 U.S.C. 10601(g) supports American Indian and Alaskan Native communities for the purpose of improving the investigation, prosecution, and handling of child abuse cases, especially cases of child sexual abuse, in a manner that increases support for and lessens trauma to child abuse victims. The funding further supports programs to provide comprehensive and coordinated multidisciplinary responses to child abuse victims and provide trauma-informed, culturally competent, holistic services to child abuse victims and their families. The Wiconi Wawokiya, Inc. will contract with two consultants to assist in the revision of Tribal Codes for child sexual abuse and physical abuse. Also, monthly meetings will be held with the Multidisciplinary Team and key official such as, Crow Creek, FBI, USAO, BIA, IHS, forensic interviewers, federal probation officers, tribal prosecutors, victim specialist, and victim advocates to establish written guidelines and protocols on the objectives, mission and roles of responsibility in support of process that responds to child abuse victims and their families. Additionally, the Family Advocate will work with teachers in the Head Start Program Start to facilitate and resolve issues of sexual abuse and sexual assault with regard to child victims. Newsletters and brochures will be disseminated to the community on services intended for child abuse and child sexual abuse. A contract with Crow Creek Council will be established in support of a criminal investigator who will work out of the Crow Creek Police Department. CA/NCF
