The purpose of this award under the OVC Antiterrorism and Emergency Assistance Program is to enable the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet to provide support to the victims of the mass violence school shooting at the Marshall County High School in Benton, KY on January 23, 2018.
The alleged gunman (a 15-year-old student at the high school) opened fire killing 2 students and injured 14 others while 4 other students were injured during the ensuing chaos. The school has an enrollment of approximately 1,380 students with an estimate 250 considered to be directly threatened in the shooting and an estimated 600 students were interviewed by police about the incident. Funding will provide supplemental crisis response and consequence management services to help victims continue to heal and cope with probable re-traumatization.
